Сюжет: The positive acceptance and widespread use of Operative Hand Surgery in its previous editions has been most gratifying, but there is always room for improvement and we have tried to make the fifth edition even better. The most noticeable changes for the reader include the following: 1 Organization. The entire format and location of chapters have been radically altered. New chapters have been created, deleting relatively obsolete material, introducing new concepts and techniques, and in some instances merging parts of several old chapters into new composites.
2 Authors. The major strength of this book has always been the quality of the contributors. Many of the authors who wrote chapters for the first three or four editions are at or near retirement age, but the hand surgery world is blessed with a tremendous pool of exceptional new talent. We have very carefully selected some of these best and brightest to revise old chapters or write new ones, in most instances liberally retaining the core elements of old chapters.
3 References. From its conception in 1982, one of the objectives of Operative Hand Surgery has been to provide the reader with a comprehensive reference list of virtually everything about a topic that has been written in the English language. Continued adherence to this principle has resulted in an inordinate number of pages being devoted to exhaustive lists of references, which in turn squeezes the amount of space available for text and illustrations. Computer technology has provided a satisfactory compromise: the fifth edition will continue to have comprehensive reference lists for each chapter, but they will reside on a companion CD-ROM. At the end of each chapter, however, the reader will find a list of annotated references compiled by each author, with his or her comments on those articles deemed to be the most important to that subject.
4 Internet Access. Another advantage of computer technology makes it possible to have the entire text and all illustrations accessible via the Internet. Not only does this give the reader freer access to the content of the book, but this edition creates a mechanism to provide more frequent updates than is possible with only the printed version.
5 Operative Techniques. Although the emphasis of this book has always been on operative treatment, an effort has been made in the fifth edition to incorporate even more specific details of surgical technique. At the same time, attention has not been lessened on the important indications for and alternative methods of specific treatments, and even more has been added regarding expected outcomes.
Perhaps less obvious to the reader, but critical to the ongoing improvement of this book, is the expanded editorial staff. The first two editions of Operative Hand Surgery had a single editor; for this fifth edition there have been four, bringing broader expertise and enhanced quality of ideas to
